That first verse always hit hard. “Cuz if a Mouse can be special, well so can you.” It always made me a bit sad to think we often proclaim great love and admiration for fictional characters, and less for humans we know or pass on the street. But, yes, as you say, if a mouse can be special, well so can you.

Can we appreciate for a moment the brilliant comedic musical genius of this song? It's ostensibly about a time zone, where the time alternately shifts forward or back with the seasons. Unlike so many Sparks songs that make a joke lyrically, this song makes it musically by shifting between 8/8 and 6/8 repeatedly. It also hearkens to the phrase many of us learned as children about time zones, "spring forward, fall back." Taking that a step further, in the context of what @metasparks has said repeatedly, every step of progress for the band has involved setbacks. They've addressed this concept in other songs as well ("Ride 'Em Cowboy", "Your Call's Very Important To Us. Please Hold", etc). "Spring forward, fall back" as a phrase fits right in there, but now they incorporate that idea purely by implication and musical composition rather than including it straight in the lyrics. Also, just going to point out that Pacific Standard Time (PST) is distinct from Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). PST is the winter clock when more of the year-round Californians are there, while PDT is the summer one where you don't know where anyone came from or what their story is. Given the Mael's long history with the area I know they're fully aware of that fact. So this song also toys with the idea of understanding who really lives in this world vs who's a tourist. California dreamin', on such a winter's day.

It would be interesting to know where this one copy of the video was actually found. Great to see it after all these years but it must have cost peanuts to make as the only visual is Noel singing & very badly dancing. I used to work in a few record shops in London in '79 & being a huge Sparks fan since 'This town' I was absolutely loving the direction Sparks were going with the 'number 1 song' album. They were back in the UK top 10 with a ground breaking electronic disco album which has stood the test of time. If I played that in the shop over our loud speakers I would always make a few sales. When the Noel album & single was released I did give them a spin too but the reaction from my fellow workers & the public wasn't so good. It was just too cheesy they said, which was a fair reaction looking back. It didn't sell & with no promotion behind it, it bombed. We'd already had four years of stunning electronic disco hits that Giorgio had produced with Donna Summer & this was sounding already dated when released unfortunately. I knew a few DJs in some of the better discos in London at the time as well who would regularly play tracks from 'No 1 song' cos they were floor fillers but the Noel track never got played as it would clear dancefloors which didn't help of course. They were fun, special years back then & disco dominated everything. I'm so glad I lived through those years cos I had an absolute ball. I still have my rare picture disc of the Noel album though!
